Project: Virtual Museum of Industrial Heritage

NOESIS – Science Center and Technology Museum announces the creation of a “Virtual Museum of Industrial Heritage”.

Aligned with NOESIS’ mission and goals to familiarize the public with science and technological developments, this virtual museum aspires to inspire people from Greece and abroad to explore different aspects of industrial heritage.

As part of the project, 1,500 objects from NOESIS’ collection are digitized and documented, which will constitute the museum’s collection, where visitors will “enter” a virtual environment and browse the exhibits. Part of the collection will be depicted in a 360-degree model and another ten objects will be modeled in three-dimensional form. At the same time, the exhibits will be enriched with metadata, following the appropriate international documentation standards compatible with the treasures of EKT and Europeana. The Virtual Museum of Industrial Heritage will soon be available through the internationally acclaimed MuseumPlus platform.

Utilizing cutting-edge technologies, a series of digital interactive applications are being developed that aim to enhance the interaction of the public with the museum, both in digital and physical space. Specifically, the project will present: A virtual reality application for the creation of a personalized immersive experience for virtual visitors, an augmented reality tour application (mobile app), which allows visitors to the physical space of the museum to delve into the importance and content of the exhibits, through a rich multimedia and multisensory material, digital interpretive exhibits within the physical exhibition space, aiming at the direct interaction of visitors and an interactive navigation installation in hybrid spaces, creating a multimedia experience during which visitors can navigate the museum simultaneously in the physical and digital environment.

Finally, following NOESIS’ long course in the field of education, an original digital educational museum kit is being designed, aiming at students and teachers to get to know and become familiar with industrial heritage and its multiple aspects through an interactive and participatory learning process. For the educational applications, three thematic areas have been selected covering a wide range of the subject of its exhibits: Energy, communications and environment form the narrative thread for three separate educational applications-games that constitute the elements of the museum kit.

The virtual museum, digital and educational applications will soon be available in noesis.edu.gr.

About the project
The implementation of the digitization and documentation of the archive, as well as the design and development of the applications, was carried out by the company PostScriptum – Informatics Communication Ltd. on behalf of NOESIS. Special researchers, museologists, cultural managers shaped narratives and presentations of archival material and at the same time IT professionals and developers developed flexible, fully functional and user-friendly digital applications, harmonized with the contemporary cultural and digital landscape.

The project “Virtual Museum of Industrial Heritage – Development, organization, documentation, management and promotion of digital content of Noesis” was implemented through the Operational Programme “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship & Innovation” (EPAnEK) 2014 – 2020, co-financed by Greece and the European Union (European Regional Development Fund – ERDF).
